Last week Mrs. Chase’s and Mrs. Burgess’ class built levees to protect their city. Both classes learned about Hurricane Katrina and why there was so much devastation in New Orleans (the levees failed). They used this information from the failed levees to think about how they can avoid seepage, breaches, and overtopping. Students were assigned jobs: Geologists, Civil Engineer, and Hydrologist. They brought back their specialized information from their jobs to also construct their levee. They had only a certain amount of “money” to spend on materials-we even had a shortage of sand and gravel! Both classes came up with amazing solutions and learned what it takes to use teamwork to construct a structure and save a city!
